Description

Post-Pandemic Futures

Jointly hosted by Edinburgh Centre for Medical Anthropology (EdCMA) and Durham Anthropology of Health Research Group (AHRG)

Since 2017, Durham and Edinburgh universities have come together to convene an advanced anthropology workshop for research on health, medicine and well-being. This annual workshop provides a supportive environment for postgraduate students to present ongoing and planned research; to improve research training and support for students working on health and wellbeing; and to explore challenges in carrying out and supporting research in health-related topics. It also provides opportunities for networking between staff and students across disciplines and institutions. We encourage contributions from within and beyond medical anthropology, including STS, medical humanities and others.

This year we aim to bring together an audience of early-stage researchers from both universities to participate in a range of online workshops and panel discussions relating to current anthropological research around, what we are calling, post-pandemic futures.

We will aim to hear about experiences of the research that was interrupted yet further carried through the pandemic; the research that is being conceived now and is due to be embarked upon soonBoth attempts will aid us into unravelling discussions of how this endeavour is likely to inform our futures – what directions is our imagination moving to? What perspectives are we to anticipate being both – subject to, and agent of – the changes we are facing in our societiesHow can we make sense of the effects these changes are going to have to the research of health, medicine and well-being; are we to communicate these narratives differently than we’re used to?

Over the four-day programme there will be a variety of morning, afternoon and evening workshops that aim to stimulate development of knowledge, skills and discussions, connecting on themes including research methods, assistance with PhD applications and funding streams, career development and employability inside and outside academia, as well as opportunities for students to present current research for feedback.

We look forward to seeing you online!

Warm wishes,

The SoMA Team
