This seminar will discuss the development of community based rehabilitation approaches at Ekjut (https://ekjutindia.org/community-mental-health/) in Jharkhand, India.
Our speaker, Dr Sachin Barbde will focus on components of CBR including the centrality of lived experience, support groups, recovery approaches and addressing distress through social interventions. Ekjut’s community mental health programme provides treatment, rehabilitation and social support to support the recovery process. The programme aims to reduce psychosocial distress among persons affected by mental illness by improving access to affordable and quality psychosocial support. A key emphasis of the talk will be on processes for engaging communities and understanding the social drivers of mental distress in indigenous communities in eastern India.
This seminar will be chaired by Dr Sumeet Jain, Senior Lecturer in Social Work and Co-Programme Director, MSc Global Mental Health and Society.

About our speaker:
Dr. Sachin Barbde, MBBS, M.Med., MPH
Dr. Barbde is a family physician with master’s in public health. He has worked in underserved tribal regions of India for the last 13 years in various developmental organizations. During the last six years at Ekjut (https://ekjutindia.org/), he is actively involved in co-developing a community-based rehabilitation programme for persons with severe psychosocial disabilities in rural Jharkhand, an eastern Indian predominantly tribal state. He is a part of an expert group committee on integrating mental health in primary care settings by the Indian Council of Medical Research. Currently he is leading a research study on developing stepped care approach for common mental disorders among adolescents in collaboration with University College London.
