Description

The EdCMA invites to a joint online Reading Group with colleagues from the University of Copenhagen on 3 November 2020, 15-16.30 UK time. We will be reading Rebecca Lester’s Famished: Eating Disorders and Failed Care in America (2019), an ethnography of eating disorders, clinical care, and ethical research practice in a precarious health care setting. Lester’s long-term research details the complexity of caring for women and girls with eating disorders and the patients’ and clinicians’ negotiations of what survival and a healthy body mean.

The themes span the anthropology of the body, psychological anthropology, chronicity, care and neoliberal biopolitics. It is an emotive read written by an anthropologist and clinician whose personal and professional experiences highlight the ‘anorexic mentality of scarcity’ of privatised health care attempting to treat women.

If you would like to attend, please RSVP by 26 October 2020 by sending an email to tara.pollak@ed.ac.uk.
