Applications open! MAT journal is searching for Position Pieces section co-editors

Medicine Anthropology Theory is soliciting applications for two co-editors for the journal’s Position Pieces section. As a team, the new Position Pieces co-editors will work with authors to develop contributions, as well as with reviewers in the peer-review process for submissions, and overall contribute to the leadership and direction of the MAT journal.

Reproductive Violence Conference

This conference takes place on 2nd and 3rd September 2024 (9:00-17:00) at the University of Edinburgh.

In this conference we will explore understandings of reproductive violence, in the light of the reproductive justice framework, as a violation of bodily autonomy and the rights to have children, to not have children, and to raise any children one chooses to have in a safe and healthy environment.

MAT call for proposals for 2024 Special Issue

The MAT Editorial Collective is delighted to announce that the 2024 Special Issue call for proposals is now open to receive submissions.


The Medicine Anthropology Theory (MAT) journal publishes two kinds of edited collections: Special Sections and Special Issues. Proposals for Special Issues are considered on an annual basis only. The 2024 Special Issue submission deadline is 15 February 2024.

A workshop on ‘Climate Change, Displacement and Disease’

In the backdrop of the climate change related challenges such as the recent floods in Pakistan which caused displacement of millions of people and widespread problems of health, this workshop was organized to bring together anthropologists, social scientists and other experts of climate change, disaster, displacement, and health.

Durham-Edinburgh Advanced Medical Anthropology Workshop

Every year EdCMA jointly organises an Advanced Medical Anthropology Workshop with Anthropology of Health Research Groups at Durham University. The venue for the workshop alternates between University of Edinburgh and Durham University. This year the workshop is taking place at Durham on Fri, 24 June 2022 and the workshop theme is '(Re)connected'.

The workshop will bring together the Medical Anthropologists of Durham and Edinburgh universities, and extends an invitation to their colleagues from other disciplines with an interest in exploring health through an anthropological lens.

EdCMA Biennial Conference 2022

The 2022 Edinburgh Centre for Medical Anthropology biennial conference explores global mental health, as a movement, an institution, and a set of concepts. Globally, mental health is said to be in crisis and in urgent need of action. The COVID-19 pandemic has further accelerated the language of crisis, with the pandemic fallout seen to cause both a “tsunami” of mental health problems as well as fears of even less funding being devoted to mental health than before. The 2022 EdCMA conference invites contributions from across the social, health and behavioural sciences that explore global mental health care, its alleged crisis and its critiques.
